The majority of us also know what healthy foods are, but we still find ourselves wolfing down the burgers, sweets and sugary drinks. It is, therefore, important for you to learn how to make that very crucial leap from your current habits and adopt healthier ones.

1. Choose complex carbohydrates
Complex carbohydrates are digested and absorbed slowly into the bloodstream. Simple carbohydrates, on the other hand, are rapidly digested and absorbed, causing a glucose overload. In response, the body releases high amounts of insulin in an attempt to combat the overload.
Complex carbohydrates include oats, whole grains and whole-grain flour, brown rice, and quinoa. They are also rich in fiber and vitamins.
2. Watch your salt intake
Excessive consumption of salt can expose you to high blood pressure and osteoporosis. It is important to taste food every time you want to salt it; in most cases, we add salt to food that already has enough. Also, break the habit of reaching for a shaker.
As you shop, always read labels for salt content. Packed foods tend to have too much salt. Avoid processed foods such as salami, pepperoni, ham, etc.
3. Moderation is key
As the adage goes, too much of anything is poisonous. Do not overindulge in one type of food or one food, instead, vary your diet as much as possible. Eat a little bit of every type of food, but in moderate amounts.

5. Eat nuts and seeds
Nuts are known to contain high amounts of fat, but it’s mainly unsaturated fat. They include peanuts, pistachios, cashew nuts, and almonds. They are a healthy choice for snacks due to their numerous benefits. Nuts are rich in fiber, folate, Vitamin E, and potassium.
Note, nuts are high in calories and they should be eaten in place of other snacks, and not together with them. A handful of nuts at any one time if enough.
Seeds, such as Chia seeds and flax seeds are also rich in fiber, protein, and omega-3 and they can be eaten on their own, sprinkled on salads or smoothies for extra nutrients.

6. Eat more fruits and vegetables
Including fruits and vegetables in your diet is the perfect way of having a nutrient-packed meal, low in calories.
